Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases
Higher education in Gaziantep began in 1973 with the Mechanical Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University, which gained university status in 1987. Following this, with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in 1988, the Infectious Diseases Clinic was also established and began providing services. Professor Dr. İbrahim Baydar, one of the founders of the clinic, is also one of the founding deans of our Faculty. Our Infectious Diseases Service provides services in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases frequently seen in our region. Our department has a total of five residents, nine nurses (one of whom is in charge), and six staff members. The Infection Control Committee, which works to control and prevent hospital infections, was established in 2005 through the initiatives of our Department of Infectious Diseases. This committee operates under the chairmanship of our department. Our nurses, Özlem Yaylagül Çam and Ayşe Kıvrak, serve as Infection Control Committee nurses. Our clinic, with a total of 12 beds, including two private rooms, monitors and treats an average of 500-600 patients annually, primarily those with unexplained fever, acute and chronic viral hepatitis, infectious diarrhea, complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, endocarditis, brucellosis, salmonellosis, meningitis, complicated skin and soft tissue infections, malaria, pneumonia, HIV/AIDS, sepsis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and H1N1. We perform lumbar puncture as a diagnostic procedure. Our in-house laboratory conducts microbiological tests on our own patients. Weekly seminars and literature reviews are held with the participation of all research assistants and faculty members, and a hepatitis council is held to discuss current follow-up and treatment of hepatitis patients. Our Infectious Diseases outpatient clinic continues to serve an average of 40-50 patients per day, totaling 9,000-10,000 patients per year.

The aim is to fully implement and increase compliance with isolation measures, improve hand hygiene, and reduce infection rates by conducting hospital infection surveillance and providing feedback on the results.
Personnel Health
To inform hospital personnel about standard precautions and how to protect themselves from infectious diseases, and to vaccinate them against these diseases. Outpatient Services
Providing early diagnosis and treatment services for patients, ensuring vaccination against infectious diseases that are preventable by vaccination, especially Hepatitis B and C (Hepatitis A, measles, rubella, mumps, influenza, tetanus, etc.), educating patients and their relatives more widely about infectious diseases, and ensuring the reporting of infectious diseases. Clinical Services
Providing early diagnosis and treatment services for patients, ensuring the rational use of antibiotics and creating related policies, preventing the development of infections in long-term hospitalized patients with underlying diseases, and educating patients and their relatives about infectious diseases and prevention methods are among our basic principles and goals.
