The Department of Medical Microbiology at Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine was established on September 20, 1988, by Prof. Dr. Sabri GÜNGÖR. The first faculty member appointed to the department was Assoc. Prof. Dr. İclal BALCI on December 28, 1989. Appointed to the rank of Associate Professor on October 4, 1995, İclal BALCI assumed the position of Head of the Department following the death of our founder, Prof. Dr. Sabri GÜNGÖR, in a traffic accident in Ankara on August 26, 1995, and continued in this role until her retirement on August 10, 2011. Our academic staff was joined by Dr. Tekin KARSLIGİL in 1996, Dr. Ayşen BAYRAM in 2003, Dr. Fahriye EKŞİ in 2006, and Dr. [Name missing] in 2009. Yasemin ZER was appointed in 2016, followed by Dr. Deniz GAZEL. In 2015, Syrian faculty member Prof. Dr. Omar BALACH joined our department's academic staff on a contractual basis. Following the retirements of Prof. Dr. Ayşen Bayram and Prof. Dr. Fahriye EKŞİ, and Prof. Dr. Omar BALACH's departure due to age, our department continued its work with three faculty members. In 2023, lecturer Saliha Gökçe ALAGÖZ was appointed.
Our department has been conducting research in mycology, virology, serology, immunology, bacteriology, and tuberculosis laboratories since 1990, and in molecular microbiology since 1999. We also provide routine services to the Microbiology Department of the Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital Central Laboratory.
Our Department provides Medical Microbiology courses in the Faculty of Medicine (in Turkish and English), Faculty of Dentistry, and the Nursing and Midwifery departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Furthermore, since 1988, it has graduated numerous students through its Master's and Doctoral programs. Our research assistants complete their training by working in the Department and its routine laboratories. Research assistants complete a 4-year training period with a total of 30 months of internal rotations: 12 months in bacteriology, 6 months in serology, 3 months in virology, 3 months in mycology, 3 months in molecular microbiology, and 3 months in parasitology. External rotations include one month in Pediatrics in the second year of specialization training, one month in Medical Biochemistry and three months in Infectious Diseases in the third year, and one month in Public Health in the fourth year.
Our Medical Microbiology Department currently continues its academic work with two Professors and one Associate Professor.
