The Department of Pulmonology has a separate ward with 27 beds. All diseases in the field of Pulmonology can be examined, treated, and followed up. The Pulmonology and Allergy outpatient clinics serve 8000-9000 patients annually. In our department's Respiratory Function Laboratory, respiratory function tests are performed by certified and experienced technicians in accordance with international guidelines. Diffusion tests, lung capacity measurements, exercise and methacholine provocation tests, and cardiopulmonary exercise tests are also performed. Skin tests are safely applied in the Allergy Laboratory. In the bronchoscopy unit, fiberoptic bronchoscopy is performed by a specialized and experienced team. During fiberoptic bronchoscopy, procedures such as biopsy, bronchoalveolar lavage, cytological and microbiological sample collection with special brushes, transbronchial needle aspiration, and foreign body removal can be performed when necessary. Our cell culture laboratory was established in 2007 and produces lung cell lines (A549 and BEAS-2B), primary bronchial epithelial cell cultures, nasal epithelial cell cultures, and primary mesothelial cell cultures. In addition to these studies, the laboratory has the infrastructure to apply molecular biology techniques such as ELISA, western blot, flow cytometry, and RT-PCR. Currently, we are conducting projects supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and the Gaziantep University Scientific Research Management Unit. We place great importance on national and international collaborative projects and partnerships. Our laboratory is currently researching the following topics: the effects of diesel exhaust particulate matter (DEP) and man-made nanoparticles (TiO2, carbon nanotubes) on bronchial epithelial cell cultures of individuals with various obstructive pulmonary diseases (such as COPD) and nasal epithelial cell cultures of patients with various nasal pathologies; steroid resistance mechanisms in bronchial epithelial cells of COPD patients; and progenitor/stem cell expression in airway epithelial cells. In addition to these topics, various studies are being conducted in peripheral blood, pleural fluid, and exhaled air in collaboration with pulmonary and pediatric allergy clinics. In the near future, studies focusing on pleural diseases and risk factors using mesothelial cell cultures are also planned. Our laboratory is open to researchers working at Gaziantep University, as well as national and international researchers, and we place great importance on collaborative work and cooperation.
