Physiology is the branch of science that studies the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions and the operation of systems in living organisms. In single-celled organisms, vital activities are carried out by organelles within the single cell. In multicellular organisms, cells with the same structure and function combine to form tissues, tissues combine to form organs, organs combine to form systems, and systems combine to form a living organism. The functioning of all these systems is the subject of physiology.
The fundamental characteristic of physiology is that the systems it studies are dynamic, not static. The functions of cells constantly change depending on changes in their immediate environment. Every living organism is affected by both internal changes and changes in the external environment with which it interacts. Therefore, the main purpose of most physiological reactions in a living organism is to maintain the physical and chemical balance in the internal environment. Today, physiologists, in light of the information they obtain from cells, tissues, and organs, investigate how a living organism maintains its life and how it adapts to its environment as a whole.
In this context, the Department of Physiology at Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine was established in 1989. On June 15, 1993, Specialist Dr. Hüseyin Beydağı started his duties and was appointed Head of Department in 1994. In the same year, postgraduate education began in the Physiology Department, affiliated with the Institute of Health Sciences. Currently, our department has 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor, and 6 Research Assistants. Our faculty members teach physiology courses at the undergraduate level in the Faculty of Medicine, as well as in the School of Health Sciences, Vocational School of Health Sciences, Vocational School, and School of Physical Education, and at the postgraduate level in the Institute of Health Sciences. Furthermore, our department has an Animal Experimentation Unit and an Experimental Surgery Research Laboratory where experimental research continues.
