A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY
The history of our clinic at Gaziantep University, Faculty of Medicine, begins with Dr. Cüneyt Karaaslan's appointment as a research assistant on January 24, 1988. Later, Dr. Necdet Abdülhamit Bekir started his duties as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine on December 5, 1989. He served as the head of the department from that day until 2009. Our professor continues his academic duties to this day.
Dr. Kıvanç Güngör (February 14, 1991) and Dr. İbrahim Erbağcı (January 8, 1993) have all completed their careers at this institution, having started as research assistants.
In our clinic, Dr. Ümit Darıcı and Dr. Cem Evereklioğlu served as assistant professors, Dr. Hüseyin Bayramlar as associate professor, and Dr. Bülent Gürler has also held academic positions as associate professor, professor, and second head of department (2009-2012).
Dr. Oğuzhan Saygılı is an associate professor, while Dr. Necip Kara, Dr. Alper Mete, and Dr. Sabit Kimyon are assistant professors in the department.
Our department has 9 faculty members, 9 research assistants, 1 nurse, 3 technicians, and 3 medical secretaries. Our department secretary also serves the other 3 departments on the same floor. Our clinic has 3 permanent nurses, 5 staff members, and 2 medical secretaries.
Currently, 26 doctors have received their specialization from our department.
In our department, in addition to general ophthalmology training, we offer outpatient clinics and rotations in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (with additional Neuro-ophthalmology), Retina (with additional Uvea – Behçet), Anterior segment and oculoplasty (with additional contact lens). We plan to open an Eye Bank unit as soon as possible.
