Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics at Gaziantep University, within the Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Practice Hospital, was established in 1987. Initially providing services at Gaziantep State Hospital, the department has operated in its current comprehensive structure since 2001, including inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and a pediatric emergency unit. Today, it serves not only Gaziantep but also the surrounding provinces as a major regional referral center.

Our department is committed to delivering high-quality preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic healthcare services for children and adolescents from birth to 18 years of age. In addition to patient care and medical education, we actively contribute to national and international pediatric science through research, scientific publications, and the organization of academic meetings and congresses.

Inpatient services are provided through the general pediatrics ward, the pediatric emergency unit, the neonatal intensive care unit, and the pediatric oncology hospital.

Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism was established on June 30, 2006, by Dr. Mehmet Keskin. Since its inception, it has aimed to serve as a regional referral center. The division provides daily outpatient services and comprehensive care for a wide range of endocrine and metabolic disorders, including growth and nutrition disorders, pubertal abnormalities, disorders of sexual differentiation, thyroid diseases, adrenal disorders, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, obesity, parathyroid and calcium-phosphorus-vitamin D metabolism disorders, water balance disorders, pituitary diseases, autoimmune polyglandular syndromes, inherited metabolic diseases, and genetic disorders. Diagnostic endocrine testing, diabetes education programs, therapeutic apheresis for familial hyperlipidemia, and enzyme replacement therapies for metabolic disorders are also provided.

Pediatric Allergy and Immunology

The Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology offers daily outpatient services for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and a broad spectrum of allergic and immunologic disorders. Skin prick testing and other allergy diagnostic procedures are routinely performed.

Pediatric Hematology and Oncology

The Divisions of Pediatric Hematology and Pediatric Oncology provide comprehensive care for children with hematologic disorders such as anemia, thalassemia, and hemophilia, as well as pediatric cancers.

Pediatric Cardiology

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology offers advanced diagnostic and interventional services for congenital and acquired heart diseases in children. Diagnostic modalities include color Doppler echocardiography, fetal and stress echocardiography, exercise stress testing, 24-hour Holter monitoring, event recording, head-up tilt testing, cardiac catheterization, and angiography. Interventional cardiac procedures, pericardiocentesis, and temporary pacemaker implantation are also performed.

Pediatric Nephrology and Rheumatology

Established in 2000 by Dr. Ayşe Balat, the Division of Pediatric Nephrology is one of the first pediatric nephrology units in Southeastern Anatolia. It provides specialized care for a wide range of kidney and urinary tract disorders, including urinary tract infections, acute and chronic kidney failure, hereditary kidney diseases, congenital anomalies, nephrolithiasis, glomerular diseases, voiding dysfunction, and urinary incontinence.

The division offers hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney biopsy, plasmapheresis, continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration, and post-transplant follow-up. Since the establishment of the kidney transplant center in 2010, it has become one of the region’s leading pediatric nephrology centers.

The Pediatric Rheumatology Unit, established in 2008 under the Department of Pediatrics, provides diagnosis and treatment for childhood rheumatic diseases, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, and Henoch–Schönlein purpura.

Pediatric Neurology

The Division of Pediatric Neurology evaluates and manages children with neurological disorders using state-of-the-art EEG and video-EEG monitoring systems. Patients requiring long-term neurological monitoring and treatment are cared for by an experienced multidisciplinary team.

Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care

The Division of Neonatology provides intensive care for newborns of all gestational ages and birth weights. Equipped with modern incubators and advanced ventilatory support systems, the unit offers comprehensive neonatal care, including phototherapy and exchange transfusion for neonatal jaundice. Physicians and nurses provide continuous care 24 hours a day.

Pediatric Gastroenterology

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small and large intestines, liver, and gallbladder, as well as nutritional disorders across all pediatric age groups.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine

The Pediatric Emergency Unit provides round-the-clock emergency care for infants, children, and adolescents with acute medical conditions.

Through its multidisciplinary structure, the Department of Pediatrics continues to provide outstanding patient care, education, and research, while serving as a leading tertiary referral center in the region.
